Whenever our team is assessing new talent to collaborate with, we always have to consider the unique intangible of how much work it’s going to take to separate perception from reality. Everybody thinks that if they had the ball in the final seconds of the game that they will arise to the occasion, but very few do. That’s why those that do become legends.

In the music business misconceptions are everywhere. I don’t want to reveal any spoilers here, but everyone isn’t living in a mansion, driving a Maserati, and making buckets of money. But the professionals and those that are willing to see it through are doing okay and that’s just fine by them. Like most industries, there are a lot of details and detail-oriented people within every facet. Every task is cause for several businesses that provide those services.

I’ve been blessed that I am able to work with great people and amazing artists. All of them, are known for their commitment and dedication to bringing great music to fans. But for those that are working their way in or trying to understand it, I can simplify it. When you get your opportunity, show, deal, job whatever the opportunity, is when it’s time to double down on the work that got you there.

You want to be a musician to make a living for yourself & your family. When you do something for a living it is also referred to as your job. 

This is one of the common music industry misconceptions. The myth is that your favorite artist is everywhere all the time, taking every advantage of their celebrity to ‘get on’. This could not be more false. Everyone wants to know how to be successful in the music business and I always say the same thing. “First, you need to define what success is for yourself”. We all set out with a dream, hope, or goal. In music, it’s usually to be as big as some superstar we admire. I ask the question because I know people that make anywhere from a modest to a downright impressive living in the music business, and none of them are what they originally set out to be.

All of them started out trying to do something else:  In a band, with a studio, making beats, etc. They are all doing something drastically different than their original goal; music licensing, copyright administration, A & R, etc. The thing that separates them is their adaptability to new circumstances.
